Haiti in deed participated in the World Cup. The year was 1974. Although the team was beaten in the opening qualifying stages by three of the pre-tournament favorites; Italy, Poland, and Argentina, the appearance is still considered our proudest moment in soccer

You probably would not believe it, however the Haitian soccer team was at one point considered one of the top soccer team in the region. Throughout the 60s, and 70s, Haiti's reputation in futball in the region remained very strong. At one point, we were considered the third strongest team in CONCACAF after Mexico and arguably Costa Rica.

The moment that we go back to again and again is the 1974 World Cup. Haiti surprised the entire world in their opening goal against the Italian team.Here is the video of that memorable moment. A goal scored by the Haitian legendary Emmanual Sanon on a long pass from Philippe Vorbe. This was at a time when it just took guts to sprint past an Italian defender. Sanon is to date the only Haitian scorer in World Cup

In a list compiled in 1994 by the French magazine France Football, Emmanuel Sanon was ranked as one of the 100 top Heroes of the World Cup. In 2007, he was elevated to the rank of Commander by president René Préval.
