Under a new law that took effect on November 1, 2014, the Bahamian government will not give work permits to anyone residing illegally in the country. In the meantime, all people withe resident status are required by law to carry their passports at all times.

Bahamian government stated however that the current wave of arrest doesn't have anything to do with their new immigration law. Over 70 people were arrested over the weekend, mostly illegal Haitian immigrants
